We have received some complaints from clients in the past 12 months about their domain names showing 'adult' holding pages once they expire. This usually happens when a client forgets to renew their domain name on time. At that time the domain points away from BWF servers to a holding page (we assume) at the domain supplier ENOM.
A number of clients have noted that when their domains expire the expired holding page is very adult in nature with what I would suggest is questionable content. I wanted to assure all BWF clients that this is out of our control and we have flagged this up with ENOM on a few occasions.
On 24 July 2012 we brought this to the attention of ENOM and the reply was as follows: 'Our management is aware of this type of issue and our policies are not going to change. As I previously suggest, please have your domains set to auto renew and a parking page will not be displayed.'
Setting all our clients domains to auto renew is not an option for us as many clients want to let their domains expire.
On 3 May 2013 we again brought another domain to the attention of ENOM and have asked their management to call us back as we have another expired domain today that was showing very questionable content. The client runs a photography website and there is absolutely nothing in the name that would imply 'adult'. The client knows he was late renewing his domain but did not expect the holding page during the 28 day RGP (registrar grace period) to be adult in nature.
I wanted to let our clients know that it is very unlikely you will be affected by this but we have seen a number of domains expire and for no apparent reason point to an adult holding page. To prevent this happening we send domain renewal reminder emails at 60, 30 and 15 days as well as invoice reminder emails just before the domains expire. Please always renew your domain name before it expires to prevent the possibility of this happening.
We are a web host who do not allow adult content on our servers (first paragraph of our terms of service) so having our clients potentially see adult content on expired domains is not something we as a company want to happen. We are looking at OpenSRS and will be checking to see what happens to their expired domains. If they can guarantee they will not show adult holding pages on domains that very obviously are not adult we will strongly consider moving to them for all future domain needs.
