New .UK Domain Registrations - Learn with Us...!

It's Stephen here from Management.  We have been working with a few clients today who were looking to register their .UK domain equivalent of the .co.uk they already own.  This domain extension launched today (10 June) so hopefully our initial experiences of dealing with problems will help someone else struggling to understand the new .uk rules.

===============================================
A client paid us to register domain.uk where he already owned domain.co.uk

The domain.co.uk was registered through Livedomains and the client had opted out of the WHO IS database.  As the client had chosen to opt out we could only see the Registrant and Registrant Type fields in the Nominet WHO IS database.  The registration of the domain.uk failed.  We called Nominet and were informed that there are 5 fields that must match exactly if the owner of a domain.co.uk wants to register the corresponding domain.uk.

Those 5 fields are:

Registrant Name
First Line of the Address
Country Code
Postcode
Email Address

We have updated this client to log into his online Nominet UK account at :  https://secure.nominet.org.uk/auth/login.html  and once this client updates us with the exact data for the 5 fields above we are hopeful his registration will complete.

A Client tried to register a .uk domain name from the Republic of Ireland

The registration failed despite this domain.uk being freely available as the corresponding domain.co.uk/org.uk etc were also available.  We called Nominet and were informed there is a new rule just for .uk domains (not .co.uk just the new .uk extension).  The registrant MUST use a UK address and a PO Box Address is not permitted.

We asked Nominet if we could suggest to our client they regigter the domain to our client name but use our office address.  Nominet advisor on the phone said Nominet Uk would be happy with this as long as we (BWF) had the contact details on file for the registrant in the non UK country.
