We noticed this morning whilst one client was restoring a 30GB database that the port was maxing out causing packet loss for other clients on the same node. It appears when this server was deployed it was set up in error with the netowrk card being limited to 100mbps speed. We made some configuration changes to the network card to have it use gigE networking and restarted the networking. This is a process we have done many times and there should be no risk in this. The worst that will happen is a VERY temnporary outage of less than a minute.
When we restarted networking the network did not come back up. There was a 12 minute delay while we had our data centre remote hands connect up a KVM unit. Once the KVM was connected we reverted the changes.
We still need to troubleshoot why the server will not negotiate at gigE speed and the sevrer is still on a 100mbps port. The server is currently showing only 3mbps of traffic so there is no bottleneck at this time. We will schedule maintenance at 3am UK time and will already have a KVM connected for immediatele resolution as the only delay today was caused by us waiting for the KVM unit to be connected
